His family had a history with the martial art of Eskrima, and he started learning it at the age of seven from his brother Filemon Momoy Caete. Filemon had learned it from his uncles Gavino, Pedro, and Juancho as well as his father, Gregorio. Ciriaco Caete also received training in aikido, ju-jitsu, boxing, judo, freestyle wrestling, and Shorin-ryu karate. Ciriaco Cacoy Canete is renowned for participating in over 100 eskrima fights with no set rules. Cacoy was the first Filipino martial artist invited to join other martial artists from China, Japan, Russia, Korea, and other Asian countries in the World Ancient Martial Arts Championships. Cacoy was undefeated in more than 100 death battles.
