In the Fujian (also known as Fukien) province of mainland China in the late 1800s and early 1900s, Kanbun Uechi studied Pangai-noon (half-hard, half-soft) Kung Fu under Shushiwa. Kanbun Uechi started his own school in Nanjing province after ten years of study under Shushiwa. Kanbun Uechi returned to Okinawa two years later, having made the decision to never teach again after learning that one of his Chinese students had murdered a neighbor using an open-hand technique during a dispute over irrigation of his land. After Uechi was initially persuaded to show Tomoyose ways of defending against various attacks, Tomoyose convinced him to teach once more while he was working as a janitor. With Ryuyu Tomoyose’s aid, Uechi moved to Wakayama City with his teacher’s self-confidence restored.
