The origins of Jujutsu

Jujutsu, also known as jujitsu or jiu-jitsu, is a traditional Japanese martial art that originated in feudal Japan. The origins of jujutsu can be traced back to the Samurai warriors of the 16th century, who developed techniques for fighting in situations where they were unarmed or their weapons were lost.

During this period, the samurai were facing a changing society, as firearms started to appear and their traditional way of war wasn’t effective anymore. In order to be able to adapt, many samurai started to study different forms of unarmed combat such as sumo wrestling, and various schools or ryu of jujutsu began to develop. These schools often specialized in specific techniques or tactics, and were developed by individual martial arts masters.

Over time, these individual schools or ryu merged or shared techniques to develop the early forms of Jujutsu, which were designed to neutralize an opponent using joint locks, throws, strikes, and chokes. These techniques were effective in both armed and unarmed combat, and could be used to control an opponent or to end a fight quickly.

As Jujutsu grew in popularity, it began to spread throughout Japan and eventually to other parts of the world. Today, Jujutsu is one of the oldest and most popular martial arts in the world and it continues to evolve. Many different styles or schools of Jujutsu have developed over the centuries, each with their own unique characteristics and techniques, but all have their roots in the early forms of the art.

In summary, Jujutsu is a traditional Japanese martial art that originated in feudal Japan, developed by the samurai warriors to adapt to the changes in the society and the new way of warfare. It is a system of unarmed combat that uses joint locks, throws, strikes, and chokes to control and defeat an opponent. The art has evolved over centuries and many different styles or schools have emerged, each with their own characteristics and techniques, but they all have the same origin, the early forms of Jujutsu.
